Whole Life Carbon – towards decarbonization of the construction industry
-
As an industry we are starting to understand both the importance (and nuances) of accurately measuring whole life carbon on built environment projects. We also know biogenic materials can play a significant role in reducing these emissions upfront, and sequestering and storing carbon over full life-cycles and beyond. However, we are finding that current methods for assessment in the UK and Netherlands are flawed when it comes to assessing the impacts of natural materials, including timber in the fullest sense. This talk appraises the role of biogenic materials in decarbonisation and explores potential alternative assessment methods to better represent their role in a long-term carbon cycle.
